My love for ragga vocals started when I got given an album called 'Tease Me' by 'Chaka Demus and Pliers at the age of ten. I liked the way a track could just consist of a rough vocal riding a raw beat. But due to my lack of reggae knowledge at that age, where I lived and the amount of pocket money I was being given, meant that it was quite a few years until I found a genre called ragga jungle that consisted of the two things I liked about that first tape; rough vocals and a very raw beat.
As a lot of old school jungle records are a bit hard and very costly to get hold of, I searched the internet looking for jungle MP3s, building up a track knowledge of what labels, producers and ragga MCs I liked best.
One day I stumbled across a new school ragga jungle producer named Soundmurderer on a label called Rewind Records. I vowed that I would own this record one day and represent this sound to the fullest. A lot more new school ragga jungle producers have popped up, people like Krinjah, General Malice and Sixteen Armed Jack.
After starting out DJing on cd decks three years ago, I found I wasn't achieving the level of professionalism in DJing that I wanted, so I sold those and bought two new Technics Mark 3Ds. Now I DJ out regularly, and own all of the Soundmurderer records on Rewind (except the first one), and a lot more by other producers.
At the start of 2002 I started playing round making ragga on my computer, and ended up making the Champion Rudebwoy remix. From there, I managed to write a few more tracks which turned out quite well.
I hope that in the future, more djs represent the new ragga jungle sound (as well as the old), and that many more producers make tracks to further push this genre onwards and upwards.
