BASS FRONTIERS 10TH BIRTHDAY
DRUMZ 2009 : DOC SCOTT (31 Records / Metalheadz UK) & MARCUS INTALEX (Soul:R UK)
SATURDAY 28 FEBRUARY - SANDWICHES
In 2007 two of the most influential producer / DJs in the history of Drum and Bass embarked on a tour of New Zealand together. No one could have predicted how much of an impact and inspiration this tour would have on the New Zealand drum and bass scene. Drumz 2007 ushered in a new era of minimal music with depth not achieved before, and introduced some of the most definitive tunes of our times at every night by producers who were at the time relative unknowns. The fact that New Zealand was the testing ground for this new sound was no mistake. Both artists have always had a love of New Zealand and its crowds and applauded our crowds ability to take anything that’s thrown at them and appreciate the truly ground breaking music that crowds in other countries have trouble digesting. The pledge was made by all parties involved to do it all again as soon as possible. It's taken 2 years to find the right time and place for this momentous occasion to re occur, but we are pleased to be able to bring you these two genuine legends back to Aotearoa to set the standards again for all others to follow. This will undoubtedly be the tour of the year for all true Drum and Bass connoisseurs.
MARCUS INTALEX (Soul:R UK)
Both as an artist and a DJ, Marcus Intalex represents the forefront of soulful musical drum and bass. From the seminal ‘How You Make Me Feel’ (alongside studio partner ST Files as MIST), to this year’s ‘Eleventh Hour’ LP (together with Calibre and ST Files as Mist:ical), his productions are renowned for pushing boundaries whilst retaining broad appeal. Marcus’ dj sets follow suit and, in carrying the same energy and passion as his music, identify him as a tastemaker and leader in the scene. His versatile style, combined with excellent mixing skills, make Marcus Intalex one of the most in-demand DJs on the circuit and his reputation for breaking new quality music, without compromising the dancefloor, only continues to grow.
DOC SCOTT (31 Records / Metalheadz UK)
The original “King of the Rollers,” Doc Scott is arguably one of the legends of the drum and bass scene. From Reinforced to Metalheadz to his own label, 31 Records, he has pioneered the sounds we know as drum and bass today and continues to lead the way forward. As an artist, he has been responsible for some of the scene’s defining moments including hardcore classics ‘NHS’ and ‘Here Come the Drumz’, ‘Shadowboxing’ and, in his Nasty Habits guise, ‘Liquid Fingers’. As a label owner, he has strived to release music that pushes boundaries with releases such as Marcus Intalex’s ‘ How You Make Me Feel’ and the smasher ‘Vault’ by Pendulum. First and foremost, however, Doc Scott remains a dj whose sets are second-to-none, effortlessly crossing the full spectrum of drum and bass and igniting dancefloors with fresh and inspirational sounds.

BASS FRONTIERS 10TH BIRTHDAY
10 years ago the Wellington Drum and Bass scene was passionate and enthused but lacked a cohesive force focused on its future development. Bass Frontiers stepped up to the plate and brought the capital well promoted and presented local parties and moved its organisational skills on quickly to ensure Wellington continued to host the flurry of big name international DJs that were passing through New Zealand.
It wasn't long before this dedication paid off for everyone in Wellington and indeed New Zealand as their parties became legendary, not only around the rest of New Zealand, but globally with big name artists longing for their next opportunity to share another night with the scene that Bass Frontiers was so instrumental in developing. Artists like Grooverider, Ed Rush & Optical, DJ Marky, Doc Scott, Bailey, Klute, Andy C, Goldie, Zinc, DJ Hype, Dillinja & Lemon D have all fell for the vibe that Bass Frontiers has nurtured so skillfully. This passion is not just shared by the touring artists though. There is not many true Drum and Bass fans across the country that havn't made the effort to travel to experience the Wellington vibe, and we could safely say they always left wanting more. In 2009, the Wellington Drum and Bass scene is the healthiest it has ever been, and without the hard work and continuously sublime parties from Bass Frontiers, there is no doubt it would not be of the standard it is today.
And so we come to the momentous occasion that is a decade in the game for D Dog and his many partners in crime as Bass Frontiers. If we tried to compare this promoting force to a fine wine there would probably be some objections, so lets say its closer to a fine malt, and we invite you to celebrate it in the fashion that we have come to expect from any Bass Frontiers party. Bring your 'A' party game to Sandwiches and celebrate being part of one of the best Drum n Bass scenes in the world with the man that’s been the driving force since 1999, and shout the old bugger a drink. Here’s to 10 more!!!
