Wellington will reverberate with the true sounds of the future as Fat Freddys Drop and The Mad Professor join forces

Active 89FM presents Fat Freddys Drop Vs Mad Professor. with special guest DJ Koa (Roots Foundation). Friday 29 November @ Bodega, 101 Ghuznee Street.

The future has arrived.

On Friday 29th November, Wellington will reverberate with the true sounds of the future as Fat Freddys Drop and The Mad Professor join forces on one stage and mix up a brand new sound dimension where nothing is sacred and every groove, every bass beat , honeyed vocal and lucious funk break coming out of the Fat Freddys music machine will be diverted live through themixing board of one of the most respected remixers on the planet, the Mad Professor drenching the new soul music of the Pacific in layers of echo, phasing and reverb, creating new maps and joining the dots between now and the next century. Forget everything you know .......

Fat Freddys Drop (rumoured to be the name taken from a particularly powerful batch of LSD that passed through Wellington some years ago) are a collective of musicians, singers and beat programmers who are on the verge of "blowing up" around the globe. Their debut CD "Live at the Matterhorn" has alone sold over 2000 copies in NZ and the independently released single "Midnight Marauders" is the biggest selling local 12" in recent history, then subsequently re-released this month internationally on the "Best Seven" label out of Berlin, shifting over 3000 European copies in the first week alone and rumours of a Roni Size remix on the way??. The energy and the groove of Fat Freddys Drop makes for a scintilating live experience as audiences nationwide can testify and with the addition of Mad Professor to the mixing board, the final FFD gig for 2002 in Wellington is set to be a real seat of the pants dub scorcher.

The Mad Professor has been a regular visitor to these shores since 1995. He has been recording in London since 1979 and is the owner of the largest black-run independent music studio in Europe. The roll call of artists who record at the Ariwa Studios with the Prof. include some of the biggest names in the reggae business - Lee "Scratch" Perry, U. Roy, Johnny Clarke, Jah Shaka, Horace Andy, Sly & Robbie et. al, and the Ariwa label has a mind blowing catalogue of over 160 LPs available.

It is with his remixes the Mad Professor has come to the attention of the wider public. Gaining deserved profile in the early 1990's with remixes for The Orb, KLF, and many others, he was offered the chance by Virgin Records in 1994 to reconstruct the Massive Attack LP "Protection", the resulting release "No Protection" (of which the cover art is this flyer) turned the original source into a rumbling, echoing monster of low end theory blueprint which has now sold over 1,000,000 copies world-wide since its release - far outselling the original - and continues to be the ultimate chill-out LP for many fans. Since then he has picked up the pace on the live circuit and tours the world for nearly 70% of each year, both with music legends such as Lee "Scratch" Perry and on his own with the state of the art Ariwa Dubshow.
