Flipside's History (abbreviated version):
Flipside Records was opened in 1994 by John Jameson & Andrew Hawkes in Victoria St.
Originally a Dance / Alternative store, the focus eventually shifted to a more electronica based style, evolving into todays diverse range of jazzy vibes,
downbeat, electronica, Hip Hop, Drum 'n Bass, House and Hard Dance.
In 1999, the business was sold to todays pilot, Jeremy. Supported by the team that is Barret, D Dog, Bubbles, Mr Ree, Shadowgirl, Charlotte and Andy Bell, we love what we do and we do it all week long.
The Ninebar: is an absolute legend.
Playing host to a wide variety of musical Genres Clinton Smiley will most likely play us some 2-Step & Hip Hop, Vee is down for some fat as Hip Hop beats.
The Stereonasties crew (Agent 99 & Shadowgirl) will then take over for some stonking dancefloor Techno. GENEtiK is to fill in the final hours with a booty-shakin, funky-as rocking house set.
Clinton Smiley:
Started DJing on Radio Active in 1988, started club DJing for the station the next year 1989. since then..
Residencies at clares, the sub club, naked angel, mas-if, juice, ESC, tatou, la luna, the matterhorn and now goodluck on saturdays.
One-off parties like devotion, eden, three LOTR wrap parties and a re:mix magazine mix CD and national tour.
Played support for sasha, doc marten, eric rug and paul oakenfold among others.
Played in london at souside soul three times and japan's kansai district (kobe, kyoto & osaka) on a tour in 2001.
Currently working as creative director, A&R pony-tail and admin bitch for Capitalrecordings.
Vee:
Purveyor of Hip-Hop beats & other fine musical delights, Vee can drive turntables as well as an MPC.
Shadowgirl:
Shadowgirl is of Fun Poison and Stereonasties fame.
She has been playing Techno in it's many & varied forms for around 6 years now and currently co-hosts Radio Active's Stereonasties show along with Agent99,
Coda and B-Lo.
Agent 99:
Agent 99 has been with Radio Active since 1996, has been playing parties since '97, is a Fun Poison "resident" and co-founder of the 'Stereonasties' radio show that runs every Friday night on RadioActive 11-1am.
She started shopping for vinyl in 1995 and hasn't stopped since!
Agent 99 has played most Gatherings in the main zone, scored more than her fair share of international support slots and is basically on a mission to seek out and play music that makes people's ribs rattle, their ears ring and slaps a big goofy smile on their faces.
GENEtiK:
Gene has played at StudioNine many times before.
Always one to rock the house - he is under instructions (not that he needs any) to pump rock-your-booty-house tunes through the NineBar sound system for your dancing pleasure. Dj'ing for around 5 years now, in and around the Nelson District, Gene is a hairdresser by day and DJ by night and currently holds a residency at the Phat Club, Nelson's hottest new dance venue.
Previously the Art Director at the Gathering for 3 years running, he has a constantly evolving sound and has been involved in the dance music community for many years. Having visited Wellington many times before, he assures us that the set he has for us will be by far superior in every way to anything you have heard him play before. Promising to be big, bad and funky as f#ck.
StudioNine: The home of Drum 'n Bass in Wellington.
Ddog:
We asked D Dog for a bio and got this:
'I like playing drum and bass it is nice music and fun and I like it when people dance. Dancing is fun too.'
But really Darryl is the man behind Bass Frontiers - consistently bringing quaity Drum 'n Bass parties to Wellington. We've given him the warm up set so he can get drunk first.
Baritone:
Baritone has been playing tunes for around 5 years now and formed Wellington's 'Beatbreaker' crew around 2000 along with Function and MC AG.
Since then, they have put on a number of local parties and played in several cities around the country.
He is also a regular guest with the Bass Frontiers crew and is your Hip Hop and Drum 'n Bass contact at Flipside Records Monday to Friday.
Baritone plays both Hip Hop and Drum 'n Bass on a regular basis and is also currently producing his own Hip Hop tracks. Watch this space!
This man with fresh tunes, tight selection and a mad scratch is set to rock the floor.
Filthy Forum:
The Filthy forum are DJ Subtrak, MC Unknown and Miss-Tic.
Subtrak won last years "Rumble in the Jungle" mixing comp, put on by Wellington's Redline crew.
He is originally from Auckland and has been keeping a low profile, producing music for the last 2 years or so at home.
Subtrak also plays at Curve Bar with the likes of the Beat breaker crew every Thursday.
MC Unknown has strong Hip-Hop roots and is originally from Canada.
He used to roll with the Nuclear Fission crew out of V.I.C. and has been living in New Zealand for around 3 years now.
You can catch him down at Good Luck jammin on Fridays with the Bro job crew. Vocalist Bex from "The Organiks" recently joined up with these two punk-asses to lay down vocals on some of their production, this will be the first time they have played live together.
These boys and girl have a new edge on the world of Drum 'n Bass with a view to involve the audience, basically bringing a new angle to the crowd everytime they play out.
They will be playing their own tunes as well as music from other local talent. These guys have been hiding out, working hard on a live show to blow you away. Don't expect anything normal, cos it ain't gone a happen!
Sal:
Dj Sal has been involved in the dnb scene since the capitals first dnb weeklys, the infamous 'junglizm' dayz of '97.
He is well known for his tight mixing of hard breaks and tech step beats as well as liquid funk.
Sal has played abroard and amongst many international dj such as Andy C, Grooverider, Ed rush, and Doc Scott to name a few.
Producing dnb over the last year, Sal has already had his tunes played out by the likes of Dj Pots (Bulletproof/Cyanide).
"the scene in welly is very strong - the crowd knows whats up - they want it propa seen"
SubNine: Is the Big Zone
Schmoo:
Has been playing in and around Wellington since well before i can remember.
One of Wellington's original House crew and currently a Vespa Lounge Resident, Schmoo is taking a night off to open for us.
Greg Churchill:
Well-known as one of the nicest DJs in Auckland, Greg is a true professional and a pleasure to deal with.
When Greg Churchill's at the decks, you can be assured he'll get it right every time, providing a set of the highest calibre.
It was so long ago that Greg started Djing (around 16 years) that nowdays he struggles to remember exactly when he might have actually begun, but rumour has it well before the advent of the CD!
2003 has seen Greg take a slight step back from his usually very hectic Djing schedule to focus on production.
With releases shortly due from Bosh: "Aside >From You/Neen's Dope" , "Ways To Do It" (Loaf), remixes of House Of Downtown "Bloodshot" and "Transit" by Rob Salmon & Majik Johnson (Ovum) plus Underwater's Darren Emerson sniffing around another potential release, you might be forgiven for thinking that Greg doesn't get out much these days!
He is regularly headlining acts throughout NZ , with Wellington, Christchurch & Queenstown being regular visits, and a has supported many international DJ's eg
Stacey Pullen, Carl Cox, Jeff Mills, Carl Craig, Kevin Saunderson (twice), Richie Hawtin, Dick Johnson, DJ Sneak, Terry Francis, Miles Holloway.
Don't Miss New Zealands Number One House DJ !!!
Andy Bell:
Andy has been playing records for around 3 years now, in various pubs & clubs around Wellington. Previously a Zibibbo resident, he currently co-hosts a Saturday night residency at Curve Bar 'Groove Essential' with John Saunders. Andy can be found at Flipside most Saturdays - listening to House, serving customers and generally winding down after a hard week as a lawyer.
Curve Bar: Niteshift Crew
Mr Ree B2B Hawkes B2B Shakka:
Mr Ree:
Mr Rees DJ career officially began at StudioNine for the 'New Frontier' New Years Eve party (01/02) where he and DJ partner Mat Blak played for an unprecedented ten hours back to back.
As their room began to overflow out into the courtyard, they realised that StudioNine was indeed lacking in the Hard Dance Department. And so 'REE-HAB' was born.
More back to back mayhem in March and May saw two very succesful gigs, in between they played Flipside Records 8th Bday which was one of the hi-lights of
2002.
Mat Blak had to return to London so Mr Ree continued solo.
August brought the One green apple CD release party to Wellington, playing alongside Hawkes. Then in September,Djing alongside Skol for Fevah.
The Package Birthday brought together Mr Ree, Hawkes and Shakka (Then Supporting Rob Tissera, Eddie Halliwell and Tolley from Sundissential UK)
StudioNine's Birthday and Mr Ree teams up with the other half of Fevah, DJ Pooley.
While continuing his Fevah Residency, this year Mr Ree has been concentrating efforts on a new party called Niteshift. With partners in crime,Hawkes and Shakka 'Niteshift' will surely build up to epic proportions.
Hawkes:
"You don't have to play fast, you don't have to play hard. Just play tracks that people want to hear. But don't play cheese... "Hawkes - DJ, producer, FEVAH promoter, and general multi-tasking organiser - what doesn't this guy do?
Hawkes' career in the clubbing scene started when he began promoting club nights in London back in 1998.
And when another FEVAH DJ, UK based Riksta, took him record shopping, he was hooked.
Within a few months, Hawkes got his first play out with Fahrenhite, then for Fevah UK, before running some of his own nights such as Charged and at Sid's bar in London.
When Blair's visa for the UK expired at the end of 1999, it seemed only natural to team up with James Colebourne to bring Fevah back to New Zealand audiences.
After holding their first Fevah party in Christchurch in December 1999, the pair have regularly attracted thousands of avid hard dance fans to parties at all the major centres.
And on the way they've also managed to play host to some of the biggest names in the DJ world including Fergie, Nick Sentience, BK, x and x.
Hawkes managed to escape the mayhem of organising Fevah NZ events in the middle of 2001 to travel to Tokyo and the UK and produce two hard trance tracks - Panic and Strange Events - two of the few hard trance tracks ever to be produced by a New Zealander.
On his return to New Zealand, Hawkes released both tracks on the first ever FEVAH NZ CD, a double CD featuring a hardhouse disc mixed by the legendary Ian M, and a hard trance CD mixed by himself.
Shakka:
Shakka is part of Wellington's newly formed 'Niteshift' crew. Along with Hawkes and Mr Ree he will be back 2 back all night long.
Sound:
StudioNine has recently been treated to a significantly upgraded sound system.
Featuring state of the art digital sound processors, a huge stack of amps and JBL Quality throughout - you can expect crystal clear, 100% quality sound for the
night :)
The NineBar sound system has also recenty been treated to a large upgrade.
