    THE COLLISION TOUR 2002

    with support from Gasoline Cowboy

Napier's Paul McLaney (a.k.a. Gramsci) and Wellington's Rhian Sheehan are two likeminded local artists who have transcended the boundaries between acoustic and electronic music, sewing seemless soundscapes of organic and synthesised sounds on their acclaimed respective releases.

With Gramsci's second album Object fresh in stores and Rhian Sheehan's debut Paradigm Shift receiving renewed interest after nominations in the Best Electronic Release categories of both this year's mainstream New Zealand Music Awards (the Tuis) and underground b.net New Zealand Music Awards, Gramsci and Rhian Sheehan have teamed up to tour their unique musical visions around the South Island of Aotearoa in October, with support at all gigs from Gasoline Cowboy.

    Gramsci:

After recording his debut solo album Pedestrian in Dunedin and collaborating with The Avalanche Trio on its follow-up The Prayer Engine in 1998, Paul McLaney hooked up with producer David Holmes of Napier's Venn Productions to test new territories of digital studio-based trickery in combination with his folk rock roots.

The addition of new technology to the traditional acoustic guitar and voice lends an idiosyncratic texture to Paul's songs and performances.

His style is reminiscent of early 70's renegade Nick Drake or recent D.I.Y guy David Gray, but Paul lets technology eat away at the edges, with layered bleeps and loops invading his sound to create a greater sense of space.

On the new album Object, Gramsci's core unit was expanded to include contributions from Jaylan Boyle on keyboards, Dave Ferguson on bass and Cameron Budge on drums.

New full band Gramsci line-up will perform on the Collision Tour. Gramsci's second album Object is out now on Mach(i)ne Recordings

    Rhian Sheehan:

Wellington-based musician Rhian Sheehan discovered the limitless possibilities of computer-based music making while studying composition at Canterbury University and has since forged his own sound based equally on acoustic instruments (a classically trained guitarist, Rhian has performed with the likes of Paul Ubana Jones and Tommy Emmanuel), samples and synthesised sounds.

His acclaimed debut album Paradigm Shift, released in June 2001, was picked as Kiwi Album Of The Year in 2001 by Evening Post critic Colin Morris and has since been a finalist for both the Best Electronica category of the 2002 New Zealand Music Awards and the Best Electronic Release category of the 2002 b.net New Zealand Music Awards.

Rhian's live show sees him teamed up with old friend and collaborator Jolyon Mulholland (Gasoline Cowboy), who co-wrote and plays on the track "Humoured" on Paradigm Shift.

    Gasoline Cowboy:

Christchurch musician Jolyon Mulholland has been blending up an eclectic blend of obscure samples and abstract beats under the name Gasoline Cowboy since 1997.

He's self-released a handful of EPs and singles of his good honest DIY bedroom electronica, and recently remixed the debut single by The Bats-offshoot Minisnap.

As well as performing with Rhian Sheehan on The Collision Tour 2002, Jolyon will be touring the first ever full band incarnation of Gasoline Cowboy for support slots at all shows.
