Matariki Consciousness 24th June @ Phoenix on Dixon st, Wellington *between the lab and subway)
Entry by Koha
A conscious 3-floor jam with rooms Tupuanuku, Waipunarangi and Tupuarangi.
This Matariki we will be reflecting on the takutai moana and invite all of those who participated in the Hikoi to this Po whakangahau
Tupuanuku (the bottom room)
Featuring: MC Tere, The Wanderers, Ladi 6, Ruia, Native Sons, Imon Star as Olmecha the Relic, Rainbow Country and others Tupuanuku will be keeping things real with bands who've come from all over the motu to support the kaupapa of Matariki. Sounds will flow from soulful wahine artists thru to crews making a bit more noise about standing up and being conscious about the struggle for justice in Aotearoa
Waipunarangi (the middle room)
Featuring: Jahstarascal, 'da coasties' and the rest of the whanau
Waipunarangi will show projections of footage taken at various stages of the Hikoi by independent film collectives working in with an intermingling of
music, images, thoughts and comprehensions where muso's, poets and thinkers share their views about kaupapa Maori.
Tupuarangi (the top room)
Featuring: Lyrical-Diva, Misteek, MC Ali, MC Tere, Art, Te Kupu, Resist,
Paora, Jubez, Don Luchito and Caro. Showing Films Ngatahi, Zapatista!, The Leech and the Earthworm and films from the Hikoi Tupuarangi begins with 'Indigenous films of resistance' making connections with what is happening in Aotearoa with the drive by indigenous peoples worldwide for self- determination.
The Matariki soundsystem continues this theme in a bassy celebration of indigenous resistance, with assorted DJs and MCs, jamming dancehall, dub, reggae and hiphop beats. Bringing the party scene back to its roots as a revolutionary force in a lyrical rampage of rap, rhyme and rhythm.
the DIY lowdown
Matariki in wellington will be a three- floor ensemble of image, audio, and lyrical content. Matariki is the Maori name for the group of stars also known as the Pleiades star cluster or The Seven Sisters; and what is referred to as the traditional Maori New Year. Matariki is celebrated with education, remembrance and the planting of new trees and crops signaling new beginnings. It was also seen as a perfect time to learn about peoples roots and connections to the land. This Matariki we will be using the beats of hiphop, dancehall and reggae to reflect on those roots.
The roots of hiphop, dancehall and reggae came out of revolutionary beginnings, like most things in todays world, dance parties have been commercialised, capitalised, and corporatised. we want to bring the party scene back to its roots as a revolutionary force of beats and breaks... bleeps and squeaks in the face of authority that is destroying our environment and the people that depend on it for their survival, music is a powerful metaphor when used for political change a road can be blocked... a piece of land can be reclaimed... governments can be confronted, a place of opression can become an autonoumous zone to the sound of music.
