10 day extravaganza celebrating the diversity and vibrancy of Newtown

10 day extravaganza celebrates the diversity and vibrancy of Newtown, where so many cultures experience a real sense of place, belonging and community.

Initiated by the Newtown Residents' Association and Newtown Community Centre this annual festival is a kaleidoscope of international food, crafts and music. Staged as a collaborative production by the Newtown Residents' Association, Newtown Community Centre, The Rotary Club of Wellington South and the Newtown Library with support from the Wellington City Council, the Newtown Festival brings to the people of Wellington an enticing and mouth-watering array of events, food and entertainment.

The festival includes activities of a cultural nature at the Newtown Community and Cultural Centre on the corner of Rintoul and Columbo streets in Newtown and other venues.

Two major events are two of Wellington's major fair days. At the beginning of the Festival on Sunday 6 March 2005 there is the Newtown Fair Day where we expect over 40000 people to take over Riddiford Street and support over 150 stall holders from all around the country. On Saturday 12 March 2005, the 20th Gay and Lesbian fair will be held in the grounds of Newtown School.
