The New Zealand Improvised Music Charitable Trust is proud to present a week of concerts by Australia's pre-eminent contemporary music trio, Pateras Baxter Brown.

The week will feature concerts by the trio, solo performances by the members and collaborations with New Zealand musicians including Phil Dadson, Jeff Henderson, Anthony Donaldson, The Dodecahedrons and the Not Quite Quiet Choir.

Pateras/Baxter/Brown play acoustic, freely improvised music, utilising various compositional devices to create fluid and dynamic structures and sound. Formed in mid-2002 in Melbourne by Anthony Pateras (prepared piano/electronics), Sean Baxter (percussion), and David Brown (guitar/electronics), the Trio was inspired by a shared desire to explore extreme forms of extended technique on conventional acoustic instruments, in an improvised context.

The cornerstone of the group sound is the use of "preparation"- a process of manipulating familiar acoustic sounds by introducing foreign objects directly onto and/or into the sound boards and sound producing components of conventional instruments.

Pateras/Baxter/Brown perform regularly in Australia and have also appeared at numerous experimental music festivals including: Impermanent Audio in Melbourne in (2003), the NOWnow festival in Sydney (2004), the Make It Now Festival of Improvised music in Melbourne (2004) and the ZDB 10th Anniversary Party in Lisbon, Portugal. Their last major undertaking was a extensive European tour in October 2004, hailed by UK magazine The Wire as both one of the best live shows in London in 2004 (Andy Hamilton), and releasing one of the best improv releases of 2004 (Dan Warburton). Their debut Ataxia is out now internationally through Synaesthesia Records.
