Take yourself back a decade, to a time where cellphones provided social status, when black Sambuca was served as a flaming shot and nightclubs reigned supreme.
The early 90's was the launching pad for dance music as we know it today, To celebrate this era, the cream of NZ's 90's club and Rave DJ's have been brought together for a night of dancefloor delights.
StudioNine & Subnine, for one night will be transformed with lighting & decor dug up from this era.
Together with a special cocktail list and drinks on offer, this night will take you on a journey back...way back in time.
Club 9One:
Matty P:
Started DJ-ing in 1986, initially working two nights a week at Excheckers.
Thursday nights were known as 'The Palace', one of the first regular nights held in a Welington club.
In June 1986 he started relieving at Clares Nightclub until February 1989 when he became their resident DJ until the end of 1990.
During that time Matt also DJ-ed at the 'Subclub' (put on by the boys that brought you 'Naked Angel').
After a stint at Claires and The Subclub, Matt headed to London where he worked + DJ'ed there for two years.
In 1993 he moved back to NZ where he soon settled into Paradiso, the home of the infamous Paradisco and the like.
Mattie P - old skool burn-out!
DJ Clint:
Clint comes from a mobile disco background where his then love of drums and percussion steered him into a passion for beat-mixing records.
Mixing skills were refined with the help of his record store owning friend and this led onto his first bar DJ experience in 1993 when he was an understudy to the resident DJ at Arena.
He then moved on to the International Café & Bar (Dixon St) and La Dolce Vite (now the Fat Ladys Arms), playing a wide range of music to packed dancefloors.
Most memorable residencies include Shooters (an absolute legend in it's time), the St Johns Bar and The Planet.
Clint has always had a knack for reading a crowd and this, combined with his scratching, sampling and microphone antics, forged a name for himself as one of Wellington's premier club / bar DJ's
Dannyboy:
At the age of 14, Dannyboy first put his hands on 2 pieces of vinyl.
He secured his first residency when he turned 15, having to hide his age working in a licensed establishment.
Since then, he has quite literally played in every bar, club, party, and club night in Wellington.
Musically, Dannyboy is always able to surprise and his previous residencies include Ash's, The Big Chill, Ecstasy Plus and the Planet.
In 1999 Dannyboy opened Firm Records along with fellow Dj Ryan Salter and is now taking time in his studio to concentrate on music production. Inbetween production work, Dannyboy finds the time to play around the country on a regular basis and has developed a very loyal following in different centres including Auckland, Christchurch, Queenstown and many more in between.
Rave Mission:
Wixmix:
Initially started DJing in Auckland in the early 90's.
He drifted into bar work and from there took the opportunity to start professional DJing, first doing mobile & private parties and then in early 1992, after discovering this new genre of music 'Rave / Techno', he managed to pick up a residency at Tapa's (Auckland), combining his love of this (then) new music with the sound of the chart toppers.
This set the path for his career as a solid and versatile DJ. He continued playing at Tapa's as well as the odd private dance party, before leaving Akld for a residency in Dunedin around mid 1993.
With his extensive knowledge of 90's Rave music, collection of rare bootlegs and his overall enthusiasm for the sound of high energy rave tunes, Wixmix has enchanted audiences throughout the country over the last decade.
Prepare for takeoff.
Sam Hill:
Sam Hill has been djing for 15 years now and has played at every major nightclub in Auckland's clubbing history.
He has promoted many gigs including The Brain and Apollo as well as djing alongside many internationals, including: Paul Van Dyk, John Digweed, Fatboy Slim, Paul Oakenfold, Armand Van Helden, Basement Jaxx, DJ Sneak, Doc Martin, Judge Jules, Tall Paul, Eric Morillo, Ritchie Hawtin, Giles Peterson, Justin Robertson, Ashley Beedle, Grooverider, Mr Bishi, John Kelly Brandon Block, Nick Warren, Armin Van Buuren, Scott Bond and many more.
Sam has firmly established himself as a crowd favourite and has recently released the "Chemistry" cd on Universal music which has sold in excess of 6000 units.
Sam's sets are a mixture of progressive house and trance usually leaving the dancefloors begging for more.
The Brain is Auckland's longest running dance party and has had 56 events over a 10 year history culminating in the recent ten year anniversary weekender.
The Brain is regarded as a compulsory event on the calendar of every discerning party lover and regularly sells all 2000 tickets out well in advance. The Brain is widely regarded as the rave event which first popularized "Techno" in Auckland. It was fresh, new and exciting and compelled the crowd to bring whistles en masse to the 2nd Brain in 1992.
The Brain has seen many different venues over its 10 year history and is stronger than ever !! Sam will, of course, be taking us back with a careful dig in his record collection to find all of the classic anthems from the 90's era.
Coda:
Coda was attracted to the emerging sounds of the UK & USA's underground dance scenes and, with exposure to some of Wellington's early dance parties & clubs, his interest continued to grow.
In late 1992, Leon teamed up with DJ Tank Girl who was running the fore founding 'studio rave' show on Radio Active.
Their partnership soon led on to the legendary 'Eden' parties Eden changed the way dance music was listened to, the music was getting bigger and so was it's popularity.
For the next 2 years Coda played with some of NZ's best DJ's at Eden parties until 1995 when he played his first international gig with Thomas Heckmann at 'Eclipse'.
By this stage the rave scene was at it's peak and Coda was the master of creating epic journeys into the audio realms that now lie between trance & techno.
Coda has suported some of the best DJs in the world including Derek May, Kevin Saunderson, Jeff Mills, Ritchie Hawtin, The Advent, Alex Paterson & Dave Angel and has also held residencies at La Luna, Tatou and S-ence clubnights at both Tatou & Escape. Coda is looking forward to this special exposé of the old school sound, citing that in recent years numerous genres have pilfered the dance tracks of yesteryear for samples.
It is time for both veterans and new recruits alike to experience again some of the sounds that modern day dance music has developed from.
Countless classics are waiting in his record crate to trigger vivid flashbacks of the heydays of rave!
