Bhangra is most probably the closest thing India has to dance music and, its reputation for livening up a party with its trademark "chak de phatte" slogan, (which literally translated means "raise the floorboards"), makes it a must experience worldwide phenomena! For well over a decade sales of Bhangra music have been rising well into its millions. It was once the gritty folk music of rural India. Now bhangra has become this season's must-have musical accessory for some of the hottest acts in pop. It is a long way from the backwater villages of the Punjab to the urban streets of the west.

The buzz in the music industry is that bhangra and indeed other forms of Urban Bhangra music are hot, and, at last, record executives and non-bhangra music fans are waking up to the potential of the music genre. Panjabi MC managed to have a top-five hit with Beware of the Boys. The irony is that 90% of those who bought the record did not even understand the lyrics. It was only a matter of time before other Bhangra artistes like the upcoming Bhangranights from Australia ( bhangranights.com) would join them, and the Bhangra underground community would finally conquer the mainstream market in the west. Leading artists, particularly from the world of hip-hop and R&B have been queuing up to work with Bhangranights to create a fusion with genres such as hip-hop, house, and reggae.

Thanks to this diversification, Bhangra now reaches a larger audience than ever, all over the world.

Bringing in godfathers of Urban Bhangra like Bally Sagoo and RDB (Rhythm Dhol & Base) they have dared to take Bhangra to the mainstream. They have worked with NZ's best R&B acts like Sir-vere and Mc MZRE. On the 24th June they are once again collaborating with two of the best in Bhangra and R&B industry.
