★ SCUBA [UNITED KINGDOM]
HOTFLUSH | NINJA TUNE | SOUL JAZZ | BREAKBEAT SCIENCE | OFFSHORE | NAKED LUNCH |

Scuba is the production and DJ alias of Paul Rose, curator of Hotflush Recordings, one of the original dubstep labels which released some of the most important tracks of the genre’s formative period and continues to be a source of constant originality to date. Originally from London, Scuba relocated to Berlin in 2007, a move which (according to some) influenced his critically acclaimed debut album, A Mutual Antipathy (2008). The stylistic synergy of the album cemented his position as one of the most forward-thinking dubstep producers. The project was subsequently completed with a series of remixes by Surgeon, Substance, Jamie Vex’d, Martyn, Marcel Dettmann and the artist himself under his house/technocentred SCB guise. His second album, Triangulation, is slated for release on Hotflush in March 2010. More recently he has been busy remixing artists including Fever Ray and Red Snapper, releasing fresh material including the highly-acclaimed Aesaunic EP on Hotflush and Speak/Negative on Naked Lunch. He has also developed the SCB project with a seminal mix for the MNML SSGS blog and a first proper 12”. In addition to label and production duties, he also runs the massively successful SUB:STANCE night at Berlin's techno Mecca, Berghain, the sound of which he committed to plastic in a DJ mix released on Ostgut Ton in January 2010. From playing a part in the formative years of the sound on the pirate airwaves in London, to working dancefloors across the globe, to a swathe of excellent releases on Hotflush and the high profile Soul Jazz imprint, Scuba brings his own unique musicality to the dubstep sound. Always fresh and innovative, Scuba's recent output is at once melodic and musical and devastatingly heavy. The Hotflush label has been a creative incubator for some of the most original and foward-thinking producers in dubstep including the likes of Distance, Joy orbison, Mount kimbie, Pangea, Loefah, Toasty, Slaughter Mob, Vaccine, Gravious, Marlow, Boxcutter and Jazzsteppa. Hotflush along with Paul Rose's other imprints - Abucs, Scuba and HF2 - can always be relied on to push the dubstep sound in new and exciting directions. With his new full length artist album "Triangulation", topping charts all over the world, and already being hailed as a masterwork - Scuba's record bag will be bursting with exclusive dubs of uncompromising calibre.

★ P-VANS
BASSWEIGHT | DPR | AQUATIC LAB

Since joining the Strictly138 crew in early 2006, Wellington based New Zealand DJ and Producer P-Vans has placed a major emphasis on music production. P-Vans sound has evolved from UK garage, Grime and Dub. An obsession with sub bass, mood and dynamic rhythm which has musically been the primary focus of his sets since 2002. In 2007 P-Vans signed Ghost Pennies to Bassweight Recordings and followed up with the debut Black Sheep EP. Since then P-Vans has signed Wasps to Aquatic Lab Records (AUS) and has signed tracks to pioneering UK garage label DPR recordings UK. Aside from showcasing original dubs on sound systems around New Zealand, P-Vans holds down the fortnightly Home bass radio show on Radio Active 89fm along side Strictly138 playing fresh material and stone cold classics live on air.

★ THIEF
STRICTLY 138 | HOMEBASS | ACETATE

In '96 jungle jemmied the lock and stole Thief's heart. From there his musical reconnoitres led him down the darkened alleys of drum and bass, hip hop, and dub. Deep soul-shaking bass was the commonality. In 2006 dubstep slipped the catch and padded across the floorboards of his mind, ransacking emotions and taking everything with it. Thief linked up with like-minded musical trailbastons P Vans, Steppa D and Kaps, joining the STRICTLY 138 CREW, in '07, while playing dubstep at parties with the Acetate crew. As part of the 138 collective, Thief has played support for and been involved in promoting the likes of Scuba, Loefah, N-type, Chef, Plastician, The Bug and Warrior Queen, Zed Bias and RSD. With a sound typified by forward thinking future dub music, and a philosophy of playing anything as long as it's good, vibe over production, Thief prides himself on finding his own way, eschewing dancefloor trends and staying true to his musical voice. Dubwise flavours, sustained subbage, swing, junglist breaks, melody, unusual sonics and analogue grit comprise the robber-dub sound. Upfront tunes sit alongside deeper productions and local produce alongside fresh international beats in his DJ sets. 2009 sees Thief focusing on getting his production up to scratch - expect to hear some originals stealing their way into sets in the near future. You can hear Thief playing tunes every second Thursday on Radio Active 89fm 11pm-1am on Homebass with Strictly138
