Biography
Steve Hill arrived in the U.K in 1997, after firmly establishing himself on the New Zealand club scene. Amongst his many DJ spots nationwide he also hosted two of the country's only syndicated commercial radio dance shows.
Steve's experience helped him gain employment at one of the country's leading record stores, North London's, Pure Groove Records. His responsibilities include the marketing, promotion, distribution and production of Hard House label, Tripoli Trax. Pure Groove recently won Best Dance Shop in the 1999 Ericsson Muzik Awards. Since starting at Pure Groove the label roster has grown to include Locked On (Garage), Casa Dura (Hard House), Hot Potato (Hard House), and Y2K (House / Trance), a dance label that Steve A+R's for. Steve is responsible for marketing, distributing and the production of all these labels too.
DJ'ing on the London club circuit soon followed his arrival to the UK, earning residencies at Frantic, their sister club Convergence, Tinrib's monthly Fish, and Provocation (a weekly Sunday club), plus playing at numerous Tripoli Trax club nights. Playing at Camden Palace, Bagley's Film Studio's, Crash, The Temple, Rocket, and Brixton Academy has become a regular occurrence for Steve, who has also begun playing further afield, with regular trips to Scotland and Ireland. He recently toured Australia and New Zealand and is set to tour Japan and South Africa shortly.
Steve plays an upfront, uplifting mix of UK and Dutch pumping House / Hard House and Club Trance, sounds he likes to emulate in the studio, where he regularly spends his time.
The studio work is gaining much positive recognition and media attention for Steve Hill, and his studio partner Mick Shiner. He records under the guises Phlash! (Hard House), Mr Bishi (Pumping House), Nylon (Trance), Digitale (Trance), and China White (House) as well under his own name.
He has recorded for Tripoli Trax, Y2K, Hot Potato, Casa Dura and more recently, Tinrib. Steve, under various guises has remixed for various labels including Nebula / Virgin, Jive / Pepper, Heat as well as Tripoli Trax and Y2K.
His records have been spun by the likes of Judge Jules, Paul Van Dyk, Paul Oakenfold, DJ Jean, Brandon Block, Alex P, Boy George, Pete Wardman and Steve Thomas on a regular basis.
2000 was a great year for Steve Hill who mixed Tripoli Trax Volume 2 (South African Edition), toured internationally, and recorded / remixed some of the biggest tracks on the Hard House scene.
Steve is looking to record more releases under his various guises, increase his DJ work, including more overseas gigs, as well as helping to improve Pure Groove's position in the dance music scene.
