The Motherland Collective is please to announce that, for the first time ever, the mighty Big Youth, with DJ Earl (Trojan Soundsystem) at the controls, will be performing live in session at SoundSplash 2006.
Veteran Jamaican deejay Big Youth is the first international performer to be confirmed for the SoundSplash Festival 2006 at Raglan's Wainui Reserve on Waitangi weekend.
Kingston-based Big Youth - real name Manley Augustus Buchanan - has been toasting on reggae sound systems for more than 30 years, and is widely credited with being one of the first deejays to bring Rastafarian culture into the island nation's music.
In his home country only the great Bob Marley rivaled him in terms of popularity among followers of reggae music. Through his initial work with the Tippertone Sound System and a string of hits in Jamaica including Hit the Road Jack and S-90 Skank, Big Youth to deejay lyricism to a higher and more conscious level and remains one of the most respected artists of his generation. He also became of the first Jamaican performers to openly sport dreadlocks, and is easily recognizable due to his remarkable teeth, which are encrusted with red, gold and green jewels, the colors of Rastafarianism. This will be the first visit to New Zealand by the 50-year-old musical sensation.
For the SoundSplash set, DJ Earl, of the world-famous Trojan Sound System, will back Big Youth.
