The official advent of spring is the equinox on 21st of September, but being the "First City of the Sun" and all, Gisborne has licence to jump the gun!
Maybe it's global warming, but blossoms are in full bloom in my garden...
The 7th annual Spring Breaks party returns to the East Coast Friday, 7th of September, with the talents of Timmy Schumacher gracing the decks.
Back by popular demand, Timmy brings an international calibre of mixing and a record-box full of funk and hip-hop-influenced breakbeats and electronica. His sound encompasses hard, twisted and funky beats for open minded people who don't want to listen to one thing all night. Through his djing career and any kind of hype surrounding the music, the Schumacher has always been well known for his open minded selections of all bpm's and flavours and for his devotion to sourcing the records that fall between the cracks. This unique sound comes across with plenty of energy, generosity and sincerity to an enthusiastic following in NZ. Timmy's original tracks have been been scorching up dancefloors all over the world, played by top DJs.
With the Baitercell & Schumacher project he exploded onto the international scene with the break beat anthem "What's Down Low" and the album The Wall Of Bass Technique.
Solo projects since then include his remix of Agent Alvin's "On The Rise (ft Spikey Tee)" (Resin Records UK) and the new "Willy the Pimp" (Ape Records UK).
Timmy is host of the high rating bFM breaks show Beat Freaks, which now airs Thursday nights from 11pm till 1am, and has supported more international DJs than you can shake a stick at.
The 7th of September is also a special day for Nego Beto of BrazilBeat Sound System. It's independence day for Brazil, which gained its freedom from Portugal in 1822.
BrazilBeat Sound System is a rising international talent on the cutting edge of roots and dance music. The DJ - live drums collective originated in San Francisco, California in 2000, bringing their upbeat sound to Aotearoa NZ the following year. Internationally renowned Brazilian master percussionist Nego Beto created the project after touring, recording, producing and educating in five continents over a 20 year music career. Highlights include touring with reggae legends The Wailers, producing programmes for MTV in Brazil, and playing with dozens of high-profile bands. His hard-case MC style and riveting performances on congas, timbales, bongos, drum machines and varied percussion instruments send audiences to delerium. DJ Mara infuses captivating Brazilian melodies with thunderous basslines. The BBSS sound is a mashup of funk, house, breaks, dub, roots & drum ‘n bass. Tight percussive arrangements complete the picture. BBSS have developed a strong underground following in New Zealand and California through years of touring and festival performances. With their first full-length album dropping in November, BBSS are gearing up to show the world a fusion of righteous beats and scorching drum rhythms. BBSS tracks have so far been released on compilations in the USA, New Zealand, Brazil and Japan through their relationship with Nikita Music (Brazil). Nego Beto & Mara also write the Brazil Beat column in The Beat Magazine (USA), bringing the newest trends in Brazilian music to tens of thousands of readers.
The venue is the brand spanking new Soho Bar. Combining an industrial feel with fashionable design and furnishings throughout, and a large covered outdoor area, Soho presents a good atmosphere and dancefloor.
Tim Livingston is a local DJ from Gisborne who plays at Soho regularly, mixing funky house with eclectic flavours.
