DUBBING YOU CRAZY !!!
Mad Professor: Chairman of the Mixing Board: the UK's most formidable reggae producer and dub specialist; and a towering figure in the history of reggae, returns to these shores in October to deliver the ultimate live-dub experience. A bi-annual visitor to Australasia since 1995 (with sold-out tours in '95, '97 & '99), the earlier shows have left behind an ever-growing fan base and a much deeper understanding of the question - what is dub ???
The Mad Professor (aka Neil Fraser) is neither insane or a teacher. The name was first given by friends at school who were amazed by the electronic experiments he was carrying out as a youth. He has become a legendary mix-master in reggae circles since 1980, keeping the esteemed company of such cornerstone producers as King Tubby, Scientist, Joe Gibbs and Lee "Scratch" Perry. His torrential 12-volume "Dub Me Crazy" series marked dub's entry into the electronic era in the mid-'80s, and his remix work in 1995 with Massive Attack launched the Mad Professors' career into stellar overdrive. Prolific record pressing is standard fare to the Mad Professor; his Ariwa record label has released over 150 full-length albums since 1981. In addition to his own dub and reggae work, which ranges from political to experimental to the downright extraterrestrial, Mad Professor has remixed tracks for Depeche Mode, The Orb, Jamiroquai, KLF and more recently in 2001, Perry Farrell.
His list of achievements though, extend much further than that.
Take for example, Lee "Scratch" Perry, the father of modern dub & reggae. Mad Professor has worked extensively with Mr Perry over the last six years, mixing all of his live performances, & recording and producing nearly all of Perry's recent work.
Romanticized as shadowy knob-twiddling visionaries who, through their mixing boards, added new worlds to stereophonic sound, the two are from different generations and continents; though slightly less eccentric than his Jamaican counterpart, both Professor and Perry walk the same twisted line. Both are passionate for electronics (Professor built his own mixing board as a teenager while Perry pushed four track recorders beyond comprehension); both built their own record company from the ground up (Ariwa / Black Ark); and both have produced music for a surprising range of artists including the aforementioned Massive Attack, U-Roy, KLF and the Orb (Professor) to The Skatalites, The Clash and the Beastie Boys (Lee Perry). However personality and style distinguish their unique talents. Mad Professor is modest and straightforward, while Lee Perry is one of the most slippery, beguiling characters in modern music.
Today Mad Professor continues to release ever-creative interpretations of dub, in addition to a heavy road schedule which finds him performing the live Ariwa dubshow all across the globe. Always an innovator, Mad Professor thrills audiences world-wide with his live dub performances, creating, mixing and developing the sound right before the audience. The Ariwa recording studio is taken on tour from London and reassembled on every stage, so Professor can perform live remixes of the master tapes from his extensive catalog.
He's joined on stage world-wide by a variety of singers and MCs to complete the live sound. The forthcoming October dates see him teaming up on-stage with Pan Africanist, a new Ariwa artist who not only MCs' the dubshow but is also an accomplished steel pan player, and this new live drumming feature of the show has been creating a real storm and huge audience reaction throughout recent European & American dates.
Mad Professor is truly a global dub specialist, dub master, dub ambassador, dub broadcaster & dub messenger, coming to rearrange your aural headspace with the live dub experience, recreating the Ariwa studios live on stage and tearing the reggae roof off !!
