LEE "SCRATCH" PERRY
The Return Of The Upsetter
Almost 3 years exactly since his last set of sold-out NZ shows (Sept. 1999), the Mighty Upsetter returns to these wintery shores for what is likely to be the last time.
Advance tickets have gone on sale today and if 1999 is anything to go by, demand will be overwhelming. For example, due to the pressure for tickets in Melbourne Australia for the tour date there on the 18th September, a second show has been added and is going on sale next week. This precludes the chance of any further dates being added to the New Zealand run - it is two shows and TWO SHOWS ONLY.
It is highly recommended that NZ music lovers act quickly to secure their seats for what is sure to be one of the highlights of 2002 - Lee "Scratch" Perry - live in concert.
"Lee Perry is one of the few who truly deserves the title of living legend; the fool-hardy speculations on his sanity detract from the creativity that has resulted in some of the most inspiring and visionary sounds to yet grace the ears of the human race" says David Katz in the official and excellent Lee Scratch Perry definitive biography People Funny Boy.
"Scratch remains an enigmatic figure, partly of his own design; many of his actions, as with his work, are simply open to interpretation. Though many describe him as a genius, others degrade him a madman, accuse him of being a ginal (crook) or dismiss him as a charlatan"
Katz says "Lee Perry has been concretely involved with every significant phase of Jamaican music, and his creative innovations have found a broader resonance in a range of other genres, from American rap and hip hop to British punk, jungle, ambient and trip hop, from Japanese electronica to European avant-garde and techno".
I, Lee Scratch Perry, hold the key to the past, the present and the future, because I don't use gunmen to fight my war. I am the Duppy Air Ace Marshall; I run a Duppy Squad and it is legal. I am the boy of the Royal Air Force. When I clap my hand, duppy appear to me from coast to coast, flying through the night post and through keyholes. Sometimes they melt the key, if the key is in the keyhole, in a puff of smoke--pffffffffffffffffff...
