From the dark sweaty hypnotism of acid house, to the bodyshaking compression of modern electro tech, through the soul-binding magic of nu-Detroit epics and the sexy machine funk of jacking minimalism, Matt Drake weaves and twists you through an sonic odyssey of breathtaking proportions.
Matt has been spinning his wares for the past 17 years, always keeping his eye firmly on the future, playing the most innovative, body rocking cuts spliced, melted and served up in a seamless sonic sauce that has shown him to be one of New Zealand's most innovative dancefloor talents.
He emerged on to the Auckland club scene at the age of 14, playing at some of the city's most formative underground clubs and warehouse parties. His insatiable appetite for new and cutting-edge music, as well as an adventurous and dynamic mixing style soon caught the attention of the infamous 'rebel alliance', and before long Matt was playing across Auckland and throughout New Zealand.
With a decade and a half as a regular at tech and electro nights up and down the country, Matt has held residencies and guested at New Zealand's best clubs. He has also been invited to Australia and Singapore to share his unique dancefloor vibe, performing on par with the world's best. Matt also co-hosts New Zealand's foremost and longest-running techno show 'Slipstream' every Thursday night on George FM, syndicated throughout New Zealand and streamed live on the web.
Matt is a staple support act for leading international tech & electro DJs, and has played alongside: Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, Derrick May, Carl Craig, Stacey Pullen, Kevin Saunderson, Michael Mayer, M.A.N.D.Y., DJ T, Steve Bug, Claude Von Stroke, Thomas Schumacher, Superpitcher, Dirt Crew, Deetron, Ben Sims, Adam Beyer, Christian Smith, Cari Lekebusch, Steve Bicknell, Aril Brikha, Mike Grant, Thomas P. Heckman (Drax), Freddie Fresh, Cristian Vogel, Der Dritte Raum, Claude Young, & Tom Clark.
Matt DJs using techniques from hip-hop-style beat juggling, scratching and cutting to third turntable layering, in addition to the club styles of equing, tweaking, dropping, filtering and blending. The inclusion of effects, drum machines and laptops wherever possible only adds to the richness of each performance. Never interested in standing still, Matt has both eyes firmly on the future while keeping both feet on the dancefloor.
