If you read this mail-out every week you might think that all hope is lost.
This is not actually the case at all. I'm just confused in the most fundamental way possible. I discovered the dance scene over ten years ago. It was a radical experience where my narrow perception of music and dancing was catapulted in to a mysterious electronic soup of alternate reality.
I was so excited to find a community where people explored beyond the boundaries of our normal environment. Immersing myself in this newfound culture I thought I had found the mecca of my disillusionment.
I thought I had found community that lived beyond the conventions of society; that accepted and embraced social evolution. I believed that I had found an environment that stimulated and celebrated experimental concepts, a place where your ideas and identity were accepted and explored with out rejection.
This was the situation in the beginning, and the key inspiration for events like the Gathering and websites like Obscure. We interpreted our own world and perceived our own fate. This raw uncontrolled energy was the catalyst for the dance scene worldwide.
Somehow the majority of the dance scene has lost the connection to beliving in a future of our own creation. It is concerned with reproduction of commercial ideas. I certainly don't relate much of the dance scene today with the essence that created it.
How do we expect to progress, evolve and grow as a community, industry and culture if we ignore our origins?
If we reject our birthright of being the brave and fearless visionaries of our own future we entwine our fate with that of all other popular cultures. To be lead quietly to the slaughterhouse when our viability is expended.
