I have been thinking about the feeling on the street in 1993, the summer before the first Entrain dance party. I remember feeling a pulse in the air, an expectation of curiosity, a sense of new beginnings.
I recall the Entrain van pulling up on High St, ChCh painted with the Mayan spiral, the Hunab Ku, symbol for the galactic centre of the universe. Then a couple of dread hippies jumping out, passing around flyers and stickers, talking about a cosmic New Years event.
In one history, this moment was the arrival of the NZ dance culture. Entrain was a spiritual fizz bomb, a cultural kick-start for a burgeoning scene. The essential link between a “reason to dance†and a “need to dance†exploding out of a psychedelic tweak on ancient Mayan mysteries of an infinite universe.
The Entrain parties launched us on a spiral course, where we swam like cosmic babes towards a burning flame of consciousness. In this social soup we arrived together to dance in the centre of our very own universe.
For many of us the spiral spun out seven years later in 2001 as the Gathering burned into financial ashes and ruin. In comedic hindsight, it was like the rise and fall of empires mapped into the glorious real-time theatre of raving? It was one great ride!
So now in 2007 are we here again, at the start of a new spin? Are we going in for another ride, for new journey into the heart of discovery?
This time though it will be different. We have our own place to stand, our own history, our own stories to tell and we have our own music.
I believe all the elements are there to create another adventure deep in the heart of the dance. There is a fresh pulse in the air, an expectation of curiosity, a sense of new beginnings. All we need is a reason to dance.
