Dance music seems to swing in a perverse dichotomy between being intelligent enough to stimulate yet common enough to make the lowest denominator. So how long does it take before the clichés start clapping their hands and organising the handbags into a circle?
The priorities of a dance floor can become a tightrope of death. Do you really play what the audience want, reminding your self in moments of doubt that the customer is always right. Or do you take your integrity in both hands and commit yourself to the serious effort of education.
I always find it interesting to note that the many of the people who brought dance music to our floors are often the people still in play, the people still defending the right to present music that speaks of integrity, soul and vibe.
Some might argue that its all a matter of taste, but I think the questions is really about your vice? Is it the music or the party? Did you come to dance or just waste the night away? Same beats, different story.
