What is the difference between a Live set and a Dj set?
I was talking to some producers today who are making their own material. When I asked them if the play Live, the said they just tend to Dj a lot of their own work.
Do daft punk really play Live or do they just play a Cd while wearing cool helmets? Does it matter? If the pop world can lip sync its way through a million records, does dance music really have to be live?
There are so many choices around how to present music that it is impossible to tell which way would be the most authentic method.
The advent of digital music has placed the Dj / producer deep into a performance anomaly. Is Dj'ing your own music still Dj'ing? Is playing clips off a beat synced computer playing Live?
Some of the most unlikely Dj's pretend to mix while a CD plays. Some Dj's mix using written notes. Some Live performances require the press of one button and appropriate hand waving.
At the end of the day it is the show that counts. The show in the every literal sense of the word, because the show is the only difference between any performance.
