Release Discovery

An enthusiastic reception for local Antix

Steve

I came to this after a rather hectic Friday night of techno. I had been anticipating this cd release for some time as it had had some advance publicity. That always helps. But I had also been to the Monolake gig at WBC in Dec 2003 which, they had supported. I was encouraged to therefore encounter, upon entering the house, the monolakish tunes emanating from the main room. It had been a cold night thus far and I was in need of a warmup. For those of you unfamiliar with Monolake he is a young German producer of what can be called downbeat techno but it is very deceptively downbeat. It was a good sound this night and I soon found myself at my preferred position as those who were there and understand these things will know about.

The brothers from Grey Lynn who comprise the enterprise known as Antix appeared and duly presented a live rendition of their new cd. Audience reaction was positive. At the bar one, who I had met elsewhere recently and I know to be into some interesting sounds, was not too impressed by one of the tracks but I do not think that he would find much to complain about here. He soon melted back into the masses.

Antix are relatively unknown here and have encountered more success overseas, namely Europe, North America and Latin America . They did not conquer these shores before venturing afield. More the reverse I feel. Reverse programming maybe. All good luck to them.

Pitch Black preceded them to the normal warm reception.

For me Rob Salmon with Jordan Reyne, who recovered from technical difficulties and other live support provided a diverting set but it was left to the Antix twins, (that has a nice ring to it but is not the literal truth), who remained to play until the close of night. The night belonged to them.

At six the main room was still well populated and this can only be interpreted as a measure of the acclaim for that which these two siblings have achieved. It is often at the end of a night's dance or trance that some of the most interesting dancing styles manifest themselves. This was true here but I had also been a part of some great and dynamic stylin' throughout. Big props to those on the dancefloor, people.

I had a good time. I had a very good time.
