Youth-Focused Community Education with a Difference
With an incredible range of courses on offer and a strong youth focus, Christchurch's Street Art programme may be the only one of its kind in the country. Where else can students study subjects ranging from event management and self-employment in the arts, to poetry, stilt walking and beat-juggling?
The Street Art programme is a community education initiative of CPIT. The aim of the courses is to give creatively-motivated people (aged 16 and over) the opportunity to develop their skills and learn about further training opportunities and career pathways in their field.
Other course subjects include elements of hip hop culture (such as breakdancing, DJing and graffiti art) and performance arts such as dance, puppetry and physical theatre. There are courses on circus arts, getting ahead in the music industry, song writing, percussion and creative writing.
This is the fourth year the Street Art programme has run and, as in previous years, the price for students has been kept as low as possible to ensure that the courses are accessible to everyone. This year, the price for a sixty-hour course is $10. A number of shorter workshops are also offered.
The first round of courses for this summer begins on December 1, and enrolments are accepted any time before then. For more information on courses and how to enrol, pick up a brochure from around town.
