Alex Paterson

It was the Spring of 1988 and Alex Paterson spent his spare time dancing at acid raves and DJ'ing at weddings and friend's parties. At the same time he was working in A&R for EG records and music, home of ambient king Brian Eno, music publisher to (amoungst others) Youth, and Jimi Cauty and home to Killing Joke, who Alex originally worked for as a drum roadie.

The first Orb single release was in October 1988 - '*KISS EP", a four track EP of mixes based around samples from New York's Kiss FM radio station circa 1981. The record was released in March 1989 on WAU! Mr Modo, a joint label venture started by Alex, Youth and Mr Modo. The record sold out of it's 1000 pressing and then was deleted.

By this time, Alex's career as a DJ had taken off, particularly after Paul Oakenfold gave him a resident ambient room at his club "Land of Oz'. Here , Alex was playing Steve Hillage's "Rainbow Dome Music" one night, when he discovered that Hillage was in the room listening to him. The two became friends, leading to several collaborations both with The Orb and System 7.

In March 1991, with "A Huge Ever Growing" , "Little Fluffy Clouds" "Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld", two Peel Sessions and several re-mixing credits under his belt Alex felt confident enough to give up his day job to concentrate full time on The Orb.

When Alex is not recording or touring with The Orb you can find him behind the decks. His Dj'ing is very diverse, from Heavy Dub, Ambient, to a full on Techno set and if you're lucky you may hear a bit of Gary Glitter or Slade thrown in!

Alex's Dj'ing career has taken him literally all over the world, including, Puerto Rico, New Zealand, Australia, Moscow, Israel, Woodstock 94, Glastonbury, Japan, Europe, America, Canada, Dublin, Belfast to name but a few.
