SUBTROPIC (UK) Producer of funking phreakbeat electronica for the Fused & Bruised label in London, Jake Smith AKA Subtropic is probably best known in NZ for the slinky grooves of the 1995 CD "Homebrew", which came about after a year living in downtown San Francisco. Ranging from deep & dusky drum and bass, downright dirty electro and supremely chilled funk, Homebrew sounds as fresh now as it did when first released, and the latest Subtropic album "Compression Point" (October `98) follows through with more warped breakbeat tunes ... A true UK leftfield underground dance producer (c.f. Squarepusher, Wagon Christ, T-Power , Autechre), Subtropic comes correct in April and May, going where no other overseas DJ has gone before - travelling for four weeks through NZ in a Kombi no less, checking the sights, breathing the air and working on a blistering DJ set especially road tuned for local audiences. Coming fresh from rmonthly residencies alongside Fatboy Slim and the Skint Records crew in London, Subtropic packs the best of the UK`s phreakbeat dancefloor science in his box. The session on May 1st promises a full spectrum of breakbeat audio - deep and driving drum & bass, warp nine electro and phat funk flavours.
