Sebastian Coda is the dj guise of British born local Leon Baldock. Coming from a very musical & theatrical production oriented family Leon's first exposure to disc jocking was in form 1&2 when helped setup & run school discos. This started a healthy record buying habit and led to many a free period in his later years in high school writing electronic music on the Art Dept computer.
The main difference for Leon was the music he was collecting wasn't conventional. He was attracted to the emerging sounds of the UK & USAs underground dance scenes. With exposure to groups like the Pet Shop Boys & Inner City, along with some of Wellington's early dance clubs his interest continued to grow. In late 1992 Leon met Chris Morley-Hall alias Dj Tank Girl who was running the fore-founding "techno gangsta studio rave" show on Radio Active. After becoming a regular in the show Leon teamed up with Tank Girl to setup the first Eden party with and played under the Coda guise at Eden 2.
Eden changed the way dance music was listened to, the music was getting bigger and Eden helped establish the warehouse as the new venue for dance music. For the next 2 years Coda played with some of NZ's best djs at Eden parties until 1995 when he played his first international with Thomas Heckmann at legendary Eclispe in Shed 21. By this stage the rave scene was at it's peak and Coda was the master of creating epic journeys into the audio realms that now lie between trance & techno.
By 1996 the dance scene had started to move back into the clubs with a new era of parties & international djs. Since then Coda has suported some of the best djs in the world including Derek May, Kevin Saunderson, Jeff Mills, Ritchie Hawtin, The Advent, Alex Paterson & Dave Angel.
Coda has held residecies at La Luna, Tatou and Sence clubnights at both Tatou & Escape. Recently he has held the resdency at Zibibbo bar where he presents a sophisticated electronic lounge set. He has also maintained a ground roots presence with sets at numerous locals events and private parties like the White Room & Black Room. Despite Coda has a reputation for driving sets, it's also guaranteed he delivers a unique set tailored to the crowd & environment everytime.
Coda, who's set are always colourful and often glimmer with the sounds of the old school, sites that in recent years numerous genre have pilvered the dance tracks of yesteryear for samples. "It's time for both veterans and new recuits alike to experience again some of the sounds that modern day dance music has developed from. There are countless classics waiting to trigger flashbacks of the haydays of rave!"
