The idea for a digital download label came from Chelfyn's debut release The Evil Plans of George W Bush IIIrd in 2002. It immediately got national and international radio airplay, with people emailing us wanting to buy it, but we had no way of getting it into shops- we were just too small to move that fast.
Bigger labels said they'd want to see sales on an indie before they'd sign a track. We could have pressed our own vinyl - but plastic isn't eco-friendly, it's expensive to ship, you need to sell at least 500 copies to make any money, and New Zealand's too small to sell that many. We looked at pressing CDs but they're also made of plastic, and we'd still have to get them into shops worldwide...
And so TMet Recordings - New Zealand's first digital indie was born, offering an efficient, eco-friendly method of music distribution, and helping electronic artists sell their music worldwide. We don't just want to make it, we want to help other Kiwis make it without having to move overseas. We offer a simple, non-exclusive, track by track deal that pays 50% of profits direct to our artists, and we're looking for other producers to take advantage of the digital publishing revolution.
